Difference in Length of Truck Axle Shafts and Housings

When installing a truck rear axle housing assembly or a truck rear axle shaft be sure to note whether or not the truck is equipped with separate emergency brakes. This is important, as there is a difference in the length of the housings and shafts used in such trucks, and considerable time would be lost if the wrong parts were installed, as neither the housings nor shafts are interchangeable. The axle shafts used in trucks equipped with separate emergency brakes are approximately 13/16” longer than the shafts used in trucks without separate emergency brakes. The housings are 25/32“ longer.
