CHANGE IN TRANSMISSION PARTS

A change has been made in the size of the notch in the end of the 3 speed transmission countershaft and reverse idler shaft, also in the thickness of the retainers used with these parts.

After machining the notch in the end of the countershaft, the length of the remaining stock measures 1/2“, instead of 7/16 as formerly.

The width of the notch has also been reduced from 1/4“ to 9/16” (see Fig. 786). The width of the retainer groove in the idler shaft has been reduced from 1/4“ to 9/64’’ and the overall length reduced from 3 5/32” to 2 29/32” (see Fig. 786).

The dimensions of the retainer and the retainer bolts have also been changed. The old retainer is 1 7/8” long by 1/4” thick. The new retainer is 1 3/4” long by 1/8” thick. The new retainer can be used with the old shafts but the old retainer cannot be used with the new shafts.

Extreme care must be taken to see that the correct retainer bolts are used with the old and new style retainers. The 3/4” bolt (A-20961) must be used with the thin retainers only. The 1" bolt (A-20904) must be used with the thick retainers only. This is important. If the long bolt were used with a thin retainer there would be a possibility of the bolt extending through the case sufficiently far to come in contact with the reverse idler gear.
